All-Time High School All-America Teams

compiled by Howard Willman

AS WITH SO MANY annual-honors things that have appeared in the pages of T&FN, our HS All-America teams have changed through the years. A brief history:

Our first 4 compilations, starting in ’74, were boys-only. And in ’74 & ’75, the selections were restricted to just a No. 1 in each event. Starting in ’76 the picks went to 3-deep, and that was the norm all the way through the ’94 choices. In ’95 they expanded to the current 5-per-event (well, most events; some lesser-contested disciplines still only go 3-deep).

Girls were added to the mix (at the same depth as the boys) starting with the ’78 version. The A-A selections have always been the brainchild of our HS Editors, in consultation with the T&FN editorial staff. Jack Shepard has been in charge of the boys since the project began; on the girls’ side Jack Pfeifer handled the first two editions before handing off to Jeannine James, who after two years (’80 & ’81) was succeeded by current editor Mike Kennedy. Pfeifer returned to replace Kennedy in ’23.
