2019 Women’s 800 World Rankings

Raevyn Rogers (silver) and Ajee’ Wilson (bronze) won World Championships medals. (KIRBY LEE/IMAGE OF SPORT)

AJEE’ WILSON WAS FAVORED coming into Doha, but ended up only 3rd behind Halimah Nakaayi and Raevyn Rogers there. Nonetheless, a sterling string of DL performances brought her her first No. 1…

IN A RANKINGS SENSE, the WC was the only race that Wilson lost all year. In the wake of the IAAF’s testosterone-level ruling on DSD (Differences In Sexual Development) athletes, we have set aside the few performances made by longtime major factors Caster Semenya and Francine Niyonsaba before the ruling took full effect. If we had counted Semenya’s two meets—1:54.98 to win the Doha DL, 1:55.70 to win the Stanford DL—she surely would have found a spot somewhere in the second half of the Top 10…

WILSON BECOMES ONLY the second American ever to claim the top spot, Madeline Manning having done so in ’67 & ’68. Wilson also ties Manning for the most points ever scored by an American at 43… Uganda provided a major surprise when Halimah Nakaayi and Winnie Nanyondo went 1/4 at the WC, ending up as Nos. 3 and 4 in the Rankings. Nanyondo is the only Ugandan previously to have ranked, being No. 9 back in ’14.
