2019 Men’s 400 Hurdles World Rankings

Rai Benjamin gave Karsten Warholm a good run for his money in Doha, but the Norwegian prevailed. (VICTOR SAILER/PHOTO RUN)

WHEN YOU’RE THE AOY, having been No. 1 in your event is pretty much a foregone conclusion. In returning to the top spot here he earned in ’17, Karsten Warholm was obviously the guy who had it all. The undefeated Norwegian, 23, rollicked through the DL season, winning all 5 such meets he entered. He gave the WR a mighty scare with his 46.92 to win the DL Final in Zürich, and his 5 fastest races averaged an otherworldly 47.210…

AS FOR RAI BENJAMIN, he came along at just the wrong time, as his season, featuring a sub-47 best and 3 races faster than 47.5, would have made him No. 1 in just about any other year ever… Defending No. 1 Abderrahmane Samba had injury problems, racing only 3 times, although in one of them he handed Benjamin his only non-Warholm loss of the year.
