2019 Men’s Hammer World Rankings

Paweł Fajdek’s ranking sequence starting with ’13: 2, 2, 1, 1, 1, 2, 1. (VICTOR SAILER/PHOTO RUN)

THE DOMINANT FIGURE in the ball-and-chain department this decade, Paweł Fajdek easily racked up his fourth career No. 1 (to go with ’15, ’16 & ’17), winning 10 of 13 meets. His 3 losses were to last year’s No. 1, fellow Pole Wojciech Nowicki, but he more than made up for that with 8 wins against him… Only legendary Yuriy Syedikh (8) has more No. 1s than the 30-year-old Fajdek…

THE WORLD CHAMPS PODIUM was confusing, what with Bence Halász, the original 3rd-place finisher, having his big throw negated after the competition when video showed it had been a foul. The IAAF ruled that he didn’t have a fair situation on subsequent throws, thinking he was in 3rd, so he was nonetheless given a bronze, as was Nowicki…

THE U.S. DROUGHT in the event now stretches all the way back to ’98, when Lance Deal scored as No. 10. That dry spell almost came to an end this time as Sean Donnelly had a strong first part of the season and ended up on the cusp of earning a spot.
