2019 Men’s Long Jump World Rankings

Cuba’s Juan Miguel Echevarría, still only 21, repeated as No. 1. (JIRO MOCHIZUKI/IMAGE OF SPORT)

ONLY ONCE ALL YEAR did Juan Miguel Echevarría finish as low as 3rd, but he picked the wrong time to do it. Heavily favored for WC gold he ended up with bronze. Still, in the all’s-well-that-ends-well department it didn’t impact his being able to successfully defend his No. 1 status in the Rankings…

TAJAY GAYLE came up with a monster performance in Doha, his 28-6¼ (8.69) being the planet’s longest jump in a decade, moving him to No. 11 on the all-time list. But that was the only time the Jamaican beat the Cuban, who scored victories in their 5 other meetings to be a clear No. 1…

JEFF HENDERSON picked up the WC bronze, but ended up behind the South African pair of Luvo Manyonga and Ruswahl Samaai, who both had solid DL seasons, whereas the American contested only a pair of the big invitationals and finished 10th in one of them.
