2019 Men’s 400 World Rankings

No. 1-rated Steven Gardiner made the Top 10 for the third year in a row, moving up from a high of No. 3 in ’17. (KIRBY LEE/IMAGE OF SPORT)

TRIVIA QUESTION: Steven Gardiner has just become the second Bahamian ever to rank No. 1 in the 400; who was the first? Give yourself a gold medal for historical knowledge if you came up with Avard Moncur in ’01…

GARDINER WAS NOT a slam-dunk choice, even though he was the undefeated world champion. He had only a single DL appearance—that in one of the weaker ones of the year—and never met yearly list leader Michael Norman, who opened brilliantly at 43.45 but then had on-and-off injury problems. In the final analysis, with DL winner Norman not making the WC final, the runner-up spot went to USATF champ Fred Kerley…

THE U.S. SCORED WELL, claiming half the spots, as behind the Kerley/Norman 2-3 we find Kahmari Montgomery (6), Trevor Stewart (9) and Obi Igbokwe (10). The last time the U.S. had 5 scorers was back in ’05, which leads us to trivia No. 2: who were they? The answer is Jeremy Wariner (1), Andrew Rock (3), Tyree Washington (6), Darold Williamson (8) & LaShawn Merritt (10).
