2019 Men’s Steeplechase World Rankings

Soufiane El Bakkali won the Paris DL, but the victory didn’t come without a price. (JIRO MOCHIZUKI/IMAGE OF SPORT)

THIS IS ONE EVENT where the WC finish didn’t remotely match the top end of the Rankings. The Doha 1-2-3-4-5 finishers ended up rated as 5-3-1-2-10. Bronze medalist Soufiane El Bakkali started his season hot, winning 3 DL races. But in the last of those, Paris, he picked up a nasty spiking and crossed the line with a bloody shoe. It may be no coincidence that he then finished his season with a trio of non-wins. But overall he clearly had the best season in moving up from No. 2 the last two years…

CONSESLUS KIPRUTO, also injured much of the summer, was No. 1 in both ’17 and ’18, but despite winning WC gold in year-leading time could garner nothing higher than No. 5 this time around. The rest of his season was less than inspiring, featuring a 5th, a 7th in 8:13.75 and 8:14.53, and a pair of DNFs…

CONSPICUOUS IN HIS ABSENCE was the injured Evan Jager after 7 straight years as the top American. His mantle was assumed by Hillary Bor, whose world No. 6 represents a 2-place bump over his spot last year.
