2019 Men’s High Jump World Rankings

Mikhail Akimenko parlayed a WC silver into the No. 1 spot. (ANDREW McCLANAHAN/PHOTO RUN)

THE RANKINGS PANEL had to deliberate long and hard on this one, in a year where nobody fit the mold of a No. 1 very well. The first thought for the top spot would be world champ Mutaz Barshim, who won his gold with the year’s highest mark. Unfortunately, he was injured most of the year and had only 3 other meets, of which he won only 1, a minor fixture on the circuit. And in his last meet pre-Doha he was only =10th in the DL Final. In the final analysis he ended up as No. 2…

THE TOP SPOT went to WC runner-up Mikhail Akimenko, who didn’t exactly have the typical leader’s résumé either. He had no international meets before the WC, as he wasn’t declared ANA eligible until September. That meant he was restricted to home meets (all the while under the IAAF testing protocols). But in that restricted time the 23-year-old former World Junior champion put up the year’s best sequence of marks and topped WC bronze medalist Ilya Ivanyuk (who was performing well on the DL Circuit) 4 times out of 5. That was enough. Barely…

FOR BARSHIM, this marks his ninth straight year in the Top 10 and with 77 points he only trails 4 on the all-time scoring list: Javier Sotomayor 117; Dwight Stones 90; Stefan Holm 88; Yaroslav Rybakov 83.
