2019 Men’s 800 World Rankings

World champ Donavan Brazier led a U.S. resurgence in the 2-lapper. (GLADYS CHAI/ASVOM AGENCY)

FOR THE FIRST TIME IN DECADES, the U.S. showed up as a major player in the 2-lap game. Depthwise, 3 Americans made the Top 10 for the first time since ’91 (when there were 4). And atop the heap, Donovan Brazier’s leadership is the first by an American since Don Paige was controversially chosen as No. 1 over some guy named Seb Coe in ’80…

BRAZIER HAD A SPECTACULAR YEAR, losing his first race, but then going undefeated, wrapping up the season with wins in the DL Final and World Championships, the latter in American Record time… Joining Brazier in the Top 10 were Clayton Murphy (his third in 4 years) and rookie Bryce Hoppel…

YEARLY LIST LEADER Nijel Amos dropped out of the London DL with a pain in his right leg and said, “Nothing serious; it will be fine.” He failed to show in Doha, however, citing a bad Achilles. He nonetheless had done enough to earn the runner-up spot, with 3 DL wins.
