2019 Men’s 110 Hurdles World Rankings

Orlando Ortega and Omar McLeod tangled in Shanghai early in the season; that became more literally true at the WC late in the year. (ERROL ANDERSON/THE SPORTING IMAGE)

IT’S HARD TO BE No. 1 when you’re only 5th in the World Championships, but Orlando Ortega managed it. Of course, the Cuban-turned-Spaniard almost surely would have finished higher had he not been whacked by Omar McLeod late in the race, an obstruction charge which led to the IAAF’s giving Ortega a bronze anyway. We don’t buy the “sympathy medal” argument, but Ortega nonetheless gets our top spot…

ORTEGA CAPTURED 3 DL WINS, including the Brussels Final, and didn’t have a losing record against any of the other contenders, so gets the top spot ahead of world champ Grant Holloway and reigning No. 1 Sergey Shubenkov, who went 1–2 in Doha…

THE YEAR’S BEST SEQUENCE of times went to USATF champ Daniel Roberts, who blew up in his WC heat. But in addition to being overall fast, he was 3–1 against SEC rival Holloway in head-to-head meetings and so earns the No. 4 position.
