WE DON’T DO TIES in our Rankings, but if we did, this would be about as good a case as could be imagined for one…

STATS: Ryan Crouser won the WC and beat Joe Kovacs 4–3 overall but Kovacs won the DL Final (a very significant event in the shot) and had 5 DL wins to Crouser’s 2. And then there’s marks, where they had equal top-5 averages at 75-2 (22.91). And each had 6 meets over 22.50 and 11 over 22.00…

IN THE FINAL ANALYSIS, we gave the edge to Crouser for winning the most important meet of the year, the WC. His margin of victory there was all of 2 inches (5cm)…

THE YEAR’S LONGEST THROW, 76-2¾ (23.23), belonged to Kovacs and moved him to No. 2 on the all-time list.
