Died: Dave Bailey, 77
On August 27, in London, Ontario. Canada’s first sub-4:00 miler with his 3:59.1 in ’66, he later improved to 3:57.7. He earned a bronze in the 1500 in the ’67 Pan-Ams and the next year represented Canada in the Olympics.
Died: Tim Murphy, 77
On August 07, in San Diego; of pneumonia. The founder of Elite Racing, he created the Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon series, as well as the Carlsbad 5K.
Died: Eino Oksanen, 91
On August 10, in Helsinki, Finland. A 3-time winner of the Boston Marathon (’59, ’61, ’62), he was a 3-time Olympian with a high of 10th in ’56. World Ranked 4 times, with a No. 1 in ’59.
Died: John Powell, 75
On August 18. In Las Vegas. At San José State, he placed 4th in the 1969 NCAA discus. He went on to win 7 U.S. titles and compete in 3 Olympics, winning bronzes in ’76 and ’84 after a 4th in ’72. Was the WC silver medalist in ’87. Set a World Record 226-8 (69.08) in ’75. World-Ranked 13 times, with a peak of No. 2 in ’74. U.S. Ranked for 19 of 20 years, 1969–88, with No. 1s in ’73, ’74, ’75, ’83 & ’87. His PR of 233-9 (71.26) from ’84 still finds him No. 2 on the all-time U.S. list, No. 11 in the world.
Died: George Woods, 79
On August 30, in Edwardsville, Illinois. A 3-time shot Olympian, he won silvers in ’68 & ’72 and was 7th in ’76. The ’72 finish was controversial, since his shot hit the marker of the leading put and was measured a centimeter shy of that mark. An NCAA runner-up in ’64 for Southern Illinois, he set a World Indoor Record 72-3 (22.02) in’74 that lasted for a decade. A 5-time World Ranker, he was No. 1 in ’72. At the U.S. level, he Ranked 10 times.
Killed: Shavez Hart, 29
On September 03, in Mount Hope, Bahamas; shot while trying to break up a fight outside a nightclub. An All-America on multiple relays for Texas A&M, in ’15 he ran third leg on the NCAA Indoor 4×4 winners. In ’16, he won World Indoor silver for the Bahamas on the 4×4. Had PRs of 10.10, 20.23 & 46.43, ran in the heats of the 100 and 200 at the ’16 OG. ◻︎
