Gyulai Memorial — McLaughlin’s Fast Finale

A blistering 51.68 served as an end to Sydney McLaughlin’s undefeated ’22 season. (GYULAI MEMORIAL)

SZÉKESFEHÉRVÁR, HUNGARY, August 08 — Although she was originally tagged to run in the Monaco DL in the wake of her latest World Record at the WC, Sydney McLaughlin instead opted to run the István Gyulai Memorial.

Running on the day after her 23rd birthday, she executed a smooth flight of hurdles out of lane 4, producing the No. 6 time ever, 51.68. She now owns 7 of history’s 10 fastest times (see box).

“I just wanted to go out there and execute and have a clean race,” she said. “I had a little bit of a break coming off the Worlds. But it felt like a good race and I am really happy with the time. We are excited to be here and scouting out everything ahead of the Worlds next year.”

She subsequently said on Instagram that this was her final meet of the year.

The men’s throws were notable, with Joe Kovacs (75-1¼/22.89) and Kristjan Čeh (233-8/71.23) missing their PRs by 2cm and 4cm, respectively in scoring huge margins of victory over Tom Walsh (71-11½/21.93) and Andrius Gudžius (221-1/67.39).

Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce continued her amazing dash consistency, winning her fifth straight sub-10.7 final with a 10.67 clocking.

“It was one of those days where I wasn’t feeling too well, but I just wanted to execute and have a good run,” she said. “I definitely have more to give. I just need to watch the races and work at it a little more. But it definitely feels good to hit 10.6 consistently throughout the year.”
