Berlin — Allman Back With Another Big Throw

BERLIN, GERMANY, September 04—Even in the waning days of summer, Valarie Allman demonstrated great fitness at the ISTAF meet, whirling the disc to 229-10 (70.06) on her final throw, more than a meter short of her American Record but nearly a meter farther than any other earthling this season. It was her fifth career meet over 70m (229-8), a mark no other American has ever hit.

“In my first comp back since Worlds, I definitely felt extra nervous,” she said. “It’s unfortunately easy to let one meet really take a toll on your self-confidence, and Eugene22 surely did this to me. I made the mental shift and decision to enjoy my last competitions of the summer, be a lil wild going for big throws, and embrace the battle.”

The hurdles generated the heat on the track. Grant Holloway led the highs in typical dominating fashion only to have Freddie Crittenden close fast on him after the last barrier. Holloway held on for the win, 13.05–13.07. “I was just maintaining my shape,” said the world champion. “The secret is to do what is best for my body. It was not a perfect race. I just need to get a couple of things fixed.”

Tobi Amusan won the women’s event into a slight headwind, her 12.45 topping Tia Jones, who clocked 12.58.

The men’s 400H produced a dominant display by Karsten Warholm, whose 47.24 won by more than a second. “I feel great,” said the Norwegian WR holder. “I am satisfied that I am able to run these fast times at the end of the season. It shows I am back to run strong, not this year, but next year.”

Elly Henes showed that her transition to the pro ranks is going well so far. The NC State alum took second to Beatrice Chebet in the 5000. Chebet crossed in 14:44.25, and Henes in 14:52.87, a PR by more than 10 seconds.
