CHORZÓW, POLAND, August 06—Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce showed no sign of post-championships letdown as she streaked the fastest 100 of the season in winning the Skolimowska Memorial, otherwise known as the Silesia Diamond League.
Fraser-Pryce settled in lane 5, Aleia Hobbs on her right, Marie-Josée Ta Lou on her left. When the gun fired, she burst to an unmistakable early lead. By 60, she had a full stride on the field. By the time she had streaked across the finish, she had more than doubled that lead. Hobbs finished strongly for 2nd in 10.94. Ta Lou ran 3rd (11.00).
“Last year I felt a lot of pressure on me,” said Fraser-Pryce, who has now run under 10.70 six times in her career. “This year I decided to just have fun. It is amazing to be this consistent.”
The 10.66, with a 0.5 wind, is the No. 11 performance ever, and adjusting it for zero wind and altitude it is worth a 10.70, equaling her fastest ever.
The event was the grand finale in an evening full of solid performances, despite cooler temps and on-and-off showers as the post-WC segment of the DL kicked off.
The highlight on the field was —surprise! — vault recordholder Mondo Duplantis, who soared over 20-0 (6.10) on his third try. No one else went higher than 18-9½ (5.73), WC silver medalist Chris Nilsen taking 5th at (18-1¾/5.53). “I like the way I was able to jump today, said Duplantis, who now has 10 career vaults over 20-feet, just 1 behind Sergey Bubka’s record 11. “I don’t think I could have jumped very much higher. I didn’t have enough speed.”
Joe Kovacs came from behind with his final throw of 71-6 (21.79) to top New Zealand’s Tom Walsh (71-2½/21.70) in the shot. Josh Awotunde landed 3rd at (70-½/21.35). “Probably we should have thrown further but it was raining,” said the winner. “It was a good exciting competition. I had to battle until the last throw.”
The women’s shot featured another DL win for Chase Ealey, who took the lead on her first effort and was never headed. Her round 3 toss of 66-10½ (20.38), the No. 5 U.S. performance ever, gave her the win over Jessica Schilder’s Dutch Record 65-1¼ (19.84).
On the track, the women’s 100H brought together a very strong field. American Keni Harrison led for most of the way until Jasmine Camacho-Quinn nabbed her in the final strides, 12.34–12.37, with Tia Jones taking 3rd in a PR 12.49. The Puerto Rican winner noted she has been nursing a sore Achilles: “I’m not sure yet about the rest of the season, but I hope to continue competing.”
In the men’s dash, Trayvon Bromell, the Eugene bronze medalist, turned the tables on silver winner Marvin Bracy-Williams, using his strong start to lead every step of the 100 in 9.95. Bracy’s 10.00 barely edged Ackeem Blake of Jamaica (same time). Christian Coleman hit 10.13 for 4th.
Without hurdles, Femke Bol proved to be the strongest of the women’s 1-lappers, taking command of the race on the final turn and staying ahead of the late charge of Poland’s Natalia Kaczmarek as both dipped under 50 for the first time. For Bol, it was a Dutch Record 49.75, Kaczmarek just 0.11 back. Said Bol, “It feels a bit strange now to run without the hurdles in the way, but it is amazing to break 50. I knew that I had it in my legs.”
Michael Norman faced off in the 400 against Eugene runner-up Kirani James and 4th-placer Champion Allison. This time the world champion took it out aggressively in lane 5. He passed James (6) before the halfway and continued to stretch his lead on the final turn. No one challenged him as he cruised home to a 44.11 win ahead of James (44.55) and Bryce Deadmon (44.68). Allison never looked sharp, finishing 5th in 45.35.
A touted half-lap matchup between 200 world champ Shericka Jackson and 400 gold medalist Shaunae Miller-Uibo turned out to not be very competitive at all. Jackson, in lane 6, never gave SMU (9) a chance. The only one close to Jackson coming off the turn was Jenna Prandini. The Jamaican floated away to win in 21.84. Miller-Uibo charged on the stretch, catching Prandini before the line 22.35–22.39.
