NEW YORK CITY, February 08—A national record in the boys 3000 was the highlight of a busy afternoon of high school competition at the Millrose Games. Californian Nico Young clocked 7:56.97 in the professional race at the Armory, cutting more than 2 seconds off Drew Hunter’s 2016 standard (7:59.33).
The top girls’ mark went to Marlee Starliper (Northern, Dillsburg, Pennsylvania), who won the mile for the second year in a row, lowering her own meet record to 4:37.76. That moved her to No. 4 all-time indoors and No. 10 on the absolute list. En route she hit 1500 in 4:19.40, good for No. 5 on the all-time indoor performers list.
“I was so focused on what I was doing that for a while I had no idea what was going on behind me,” said the NC State-bound Starliper, who won by more than 6 seconds over Juliette Whittaker (Mt de Sales, Catonsville, Maryland). “I just wanted to hit those 70 splits as accurately as I can. I was going through and I was maybe just a second off and I was feeling really good. When I saw the clock I was like, ‘Wow!’”
Back in 6th was Taylor Ewert (Beavercreek, Ohio), who finished in 4:50.07 a few hours after taking the women’s mile walk in a year-leading 6:34.53.
Distance superstar Katelyn Tuohy (North Rockland, Thiells, New York) opted not to run an individual event, so there was no head-to-head with Starliper. However, Tuohy anchored her school’s 4×8 in 2:09.41, the day’s fastest split, to move up 7 spots to 4th (9:20.20) behind the list-leading 9:13.72 winner by Brentwood (Tennessee).
Others moving up the all-time lists were Sean Dixon-Brodie (Bloomfield, Connecticut), who won the boys triple jump with history’s No. 3 effort, 52-1¾, and Reheem Hayles (Springfield Gardens, New York), now No. 6 in the 600 thanks to a 1:18.59 victory.
Two days before the main portion of the meet, Monique Hardy (Thomas, Webster, New York) launched the 20-pound weight 66-11¼, the second farthest throw of all time, behind Shelby Ashe’s 9-year-old HSR 68-2¾.
