PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, April 28-30 — As is frequently the case, Jamaican foursomes dominated Penn’s prep baton events. Individually, the best marks came from a pair of American middle-distance runners.

Juliette Whittaker (Mount de Sales, Catonsville, Maryland) led the way with a nifty 800/mile double. The longer race came on Thursday as she dominated the girls mile with a 4:41.18 that found her winning by more than 5 seconds.

On Friday she went up against the pros in the women’s 800. Just 5th at the bell (59.29) she ran down all but one as she produced the fastest outdoor prep time of the year, 2:01.55.

Junior Sophia Gorriaran (Brown, Providence, Rhode Island), who finished a spot behind Whittaker in last year’s 800 All-America ratings, dropped down to the women’s 600, where she finished 4th in 1:25.22. That’s the second-fastest high school time ever.

Jamaican teams won 6 of the 8 relay events (4×1, 4×4, 4×8) with U.S. squads capturing both distance medleys.

Of note on the field: 3rd in the boys discus was Benjamin Shue (Bergen, Oradell, New Jersey) with a national frosh-class record of 193-0.
