ACC Women — Wiltrout’s Long Wait Over

Now a grad student, Madison Wiltrout got her first PR since she was a high school soph. (NORTH CAROLINA ATHLETICS)

DURHAM, NORTH CAROLINA, May 12-13 — Way back in May of ’15, soph Madison Wiltrout raised the national HS Record in the javelin to 185-8 (56.60). Unfortunately, just a few weeks later she had to have surgery on her throwing elbow, leading her to report, “The doctors said I can be better than ever.”

The docs were right, but nobody imagined it would take the better part of a decade to come true. Lightning finally struck at this year’s Tom Jones Memorial in April as Wiltrout reached 187-4 (57.11) to take over the yearly collegiate lead.

She got only better at the ACC Championships. Now a 22-year-old grad student (with junior standing eligibility-wise) she first PRed in round 4 at 188-9 (57.55) then finished off with a 196-11 (60.03) heave that made her No. 11 American ever and No. 9 collegian.

The meet standout on the track was Katelyn Tuohy, whose year-leading 4:06.84 in the 1500 moved her to No. 7 on the all-time collegiate list. Some 2 hours later she came back in the 5000, her 15:50.02 giving her 2nd behind teammate Samantha Bush (14:56.20).

Miami beat host Duke 108–100.5 for the team title. Said Hurricane coach Amy Deem, “I’m proud of all of our teams, but especially proud of this group… they just really, really wanted it. We had to work really hard to get to this point. I don’t think anybody coming into the championships, except us, expected us to do this. From the first day to the end, they just kept fighting and kept fighting. I’m just very, very proud of this group.”
