Big 12 Women — Alfred Dashes 10.81 & 10.80w

Julien Alfred now stands at No. 3 on the all-time collegiate 100 list. (ASHLEIGH YOUNG/TEXAS ATHLETICS)

LUBBOCK, TEXAS, May 13-15 — Texas triumphed over Texas Tech 173½–162, but the real story of the Big 12 Women was the emergence of Longhorn sprinter Julien Alfred as a major contender in the dash. In the heats, the speedy soph zipped a stunning 10.81 to become the No. 3 collegiate sprinter ever. Sure, she had a healthy 1.7 wind, and sure, the meet was held in Lubbock, at a friendly 981m of altitude. But still. Her previous PR was the 10.98 she ran to win at Mt. SAC.

In the final, Alfred — who represents St. Lucia internationally — showed she was no fluke, hitting 10.80w with a tad too much breeze (2.4). That was the No. 5 collegiate performance ever, all conditions. Behind her came fellow Longhorn Kevona Davis in 10.83w, with Tech’s Rosemary Chukwuma at 10.88w.

Earlier in the day, Alfred and her teammates made Texas the No. 5 school ever in the 4×1, winning the relay with a 42.35 ahead of Texas Tech (42.75, No. 10 school ever). Longhorn sprint dominance extended to the 200 and 400, where Kynnedy Flannel (22.23) and Stacey Ann Williams (50.21) won.

One of the most stunning races came in the 100H, where Demisha Roswell of Tech came from behind at the lean to beat favored Ackera Nugent of Baylor in a collegiate leader 12.44 to Nugent’s 12.45, the two moving to =4 and 6 on the ATL, with the wind blowing a 1.5.

Monae’ Nichols produced an outdoor world leader for Texas Tech in the long jump, spanning 22-10½ (6.97) to move into a tie at No. 3 among collegians all-time. That topped teammate Ruth Usoro’s 22-3 (6.78). Usoro the next day won the triple jump with a windy 45-9 (13.94).

Solid marks abounded in the jumps, where Tech’s Sidney Sapp cleared 6-2¼ (1.89) and Oklahoma frosh Olivia Lueking vaulted 14-7½ (4.46).

The throws were equally impressive: Kayli Johnson of Texas Tech hit 58-4¾ (17.80) in the shot; Alexandra Emilianov of Kansas won the discus at 198-5 (60.48) and Oklahoma’s Lauren Jones hammered 222-1 (67.69).

The meet was capped by Baylor blazing a solo 3:26.92 to put itself into the national 4×4 picture.
