TUCSON, ARIZONA, May 22—At the USATF Throws Festival, Olympic champion Ryan Crouser once again clarified his dominance over the world’s best shot putters, heaving the 16-pounder out to a PR 75-6 (23.01), the longest throw on the planet in exactly 32 years, and the second-longest of all time, just 2 inches (5cm) away from Ulf Timmermann’s list leader.
Crouser, the first thrower of the day, cast his shadow over the competition early with a 73-7½ (22.44) opener. The best response came from reigning world champ Joe Kovacs at 69-9¾ (21.28). Crouser followed with a 74-1½ (22.59) and 72-10 (22.20) before fouling round 4. Then came the bombs. The winning throw came in round 5, a powerful drive perfectly in the middle of the zone. Crouser knew immediately and was exuberant before the measurement came in.
Then he followed with a 75-0 (22.86) toss to close out the day. It was the first time in history that anyone has topped 75-feet twice in a series (see chart).
Kovacs improved to 72-3¾ (22.04) for 2nd, as Darrell Hill (71-9½/21.88) and Tom Walsh (70-11¼/21.62) also topped 70.
The performance came after Crouser had won on Thursday in the same circle, topping Walsh at the Tucson Elite Classic with a 74-1¾ (22.60). The Kiwi had thrown 71-2¾ (21.71). (Continued below)
Crouser wasn’t the only highlight of the top-level meeting of muscle. Arizona State’s Dutch import Jorinde van Klinken also thrived twice in Tucson. In the Thursday meet the Sun Devil grad student had PRed three times, ultimately moving to No. 2 on the all-time collegiate list with her national record 216-4 (65.94). This time, with a friendly wind, she PRed twice more, hitting 219-10 (67.00) in the fourth round and 230-4 (70.22) in the fifth. The latter was more than just a PR, however, it was also a Collegiate Record, finally taking down the 221-5 (67.48) set by Arizona’s Meg Ritchie way back in ’81. Shadae Lawrence set a Jamaican Record 219-11 (67.05) in 2nd.
The women’s hammer brought together the top U.S. talent in a Trials preview of sorts. Foul throws were the order of the day as the top 3 produced 10 of them, but good marks abounded. Janee’ Kassanavoid led early with her 247-8 (75.50) in round 1. Then in round 4, Gwen Berry hurled a 251-11 (76.79), followed by Brooke Andersen moving into 2nd with her 250-6 (76.36).
Deanna Price had to work through some fouling issues but in round 5 went 248-11 (75.88) to move into 3rd. Kassanavoid ended up 4th after not improving on her opener, but did move to No. 5 on the all-time U.S. list.
The men’s hammer also foreshadowed a competitive men’s event to come in Eugene, as Rudy Winkler went 267-2 (81.44) to win with his No. 2 throw ever. He added a 266-3 (81.17) for good measure. Joining him — with new PRs beyond the Olympic standard — were Sean Donnelly (260-1/79.27) and Daniel Haugh (259-3/79.03) as they became Nos. 6 and 10 on the all-time U.S. list.
Resurging Maggie Malone nailed a PR in the javelin, her round 4 toss of 209-4 (63.81) promoting her to No. 4 American ever. Curtis Thompson topped Riley Dolezal in the men’s spear, hitting a list-leading 267-2 (81.44) to Dolezal’s 262-0 (79.86).
The only non-throws contested were a pair of high jumps. Vashti Cunningham cleared an outdoor-AL 6-6¼ (1.99) to top the 6-5 (1.96) PR of Jelena Rowe. For the men, Shelby McEwen impressed with a PR 7-7¾ (2.33).
