RALEIGH, NORTH CAROLINA, May 13-15 — Yared Nuguse began this year as the reigning NCAA 1500 champion, having won the ’19 title by the infinitesimally small margin of 0.003 seconds. What he didn’t have on his résumé was a raft of blistering times. In fact, only once had he ever broken 3:40, with a 3:38.32 in ’19.
The post-layoff year Nuguse is much faster. And capable of taking down big names, as he proved at the Oregon Twilight meet (Eugene, May 07), where his 3:35.96 handled big Duck names Cooper Teare (3:35.97 outdoor PR) and Cole Hocker (3:36.47 outdoor PR). That moved the Notre Dame junior up to No. 10 on the all-time collegiate list. (Continued below)
Nuguse was even better at the ACC Championships, needing no big-time rivals to push him as he ripped off a CR 3:34.68… in the heats. An amazing performance. His 3:40.86 win in the final was anti-climactic.
