Pac-12 Men — Oregon Men Rack Up Record Total

USC’s Isaiah Jewett ran the year’s fastest collegiate 800, but the Duck machine went 2-3-4 behind him. (KEVIN MORRIS)

LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA, May 14-16 — Using extraordinary depth to score in 17 out 21 events, Oregon handily won its 14th straight Pac-12 men’s team title. The Ducks finished with a meet record 185 points, 48 ahead of USC, which tallied 137.

Coach Robert Johnson analyzed, “That’s a big number at a conference meet and what it shows is that we’re a complete team. We do a good job of scoring in a multitude of events. I’m super proud to see their work pay off and also excited to see them be able to continue the conference legacy of this program.”

The best individual mark went to USC’s Isaiah Jewett in the 800. The Trojan senior used splits of 52.09 & 53.07 to take down the Oregon power duo of Charlie Hunter and Cole Hocker. Jewett and teammate Sam Van Dorpe were 1-2 at the bell, gapping Hocker and Hunter — who were in 6th and 7th — by more than a second. Looking comfortable and unpressed, Jewett crossed the line in a year-leading 1:45.16 that was just 0.04 off of Joaquim Cruz’s venerable meet record from ’84.

Oregon went 1-2 in the 5000 as Hocker and 1500 winner Cooper Teare bided their time before taking off with Stanford’s redshirt frosh Charles Hicks and Colorado’s Eduardo Herrera in tow. Hocker, in what has to be a very rare double, finished in 13:32.68, with Teare 2nd in 13:34.45, followed by Hicks (13:35.60) and Herrera (13:36.19).

In the 1500, Teare had waited until the time was right before making his move. At the bell he was on the shoulder of Washington State’s Paul Ryan, with teammates James West and Reed Brown and Washington’s Sam Turner nearby. Teare stormed the homestretch to finish in 3:39.81, followed by Ryan (3:40.62), West (3:41.19) and Brown (3:41.42).

USC’s Davonte Burnet took advantage of Oregon frosh Micah Williams’ stumble out of the blocks to win the 100 by 0.04 with a PR 10.05. Burnett came back to complete a dash double by taking the 200 in 20.55, also a PR.

Arizona’s sub-45 frosh Johnnie Blockburger looked completely at ease as he strode to a 45.57 finish in the 400, 0.20 ahead of USC’s Brian Herron.

It must have felt like practice in the 110H as Arizona State soph Kentre Patterson and frosh Jamar Marshall lined up in lanes 5 & 6 and then sped to the finish, with Marshall taking the title, 13.49 – 13.57.

USC’s Nathan Bultman threw 239-11 (73.12) to take the hammer title with an American collegiate leader. Arizona’s Jordan Geist took 2nd at 235-6 (71.78). Geist went on to win the shot at 66-9¼ (20.35), to take his third consecutive conference title.

In one of the more bizarre races of the year, Oregon’s Jackson Mestler ended up winning the steeplechase after Washington State’s Colton Johnsen was in the lead as he approached the final water jump, but the Cougar fell and Washington’s Joe Waskom moved into the lead. Approaching the finish, Waskom thought he had crossed the line, when, in fact, he was still several meters short, and ended up 2nd, 8:35.32–8:35.71, when he was passed by Mestler. Johnsen finished 6th in 8:51.39.
