Big 12 Women — Davis & Flannel Power Longhorns

MANHATTAN, KANSAS, May 14–16 — Edrick Floréal’s Texas women rolled at the Big 12, racking up a meet record 207 points to nearly double the tally of 114 from runner-up Kansas State.

Latvian frosh Kristīne Blaževiča jumpstarted the point machine with a heptathlon win (5947) and 10 subsequent event wins, including both relays, went to Longhorns.

Long jump CR holder Tara Davis needed just one trip down the runway on Saturday to secure her win but she made it memorable, spanning 22-10½ (6.97) to equal the No. 3 leap ever by a collegian. The big mark came on her first attempt and she passed her remaining opportunities.

Soph Davis then turned to the track on Sunday and won the 100H in 13.02 from Baylor frosh Ackera Nugent, the NCAA Indoor 60H titlist.

“Tara Davis, I think when she was a baby, they must have dropped her in a big cup of coffee,” Floréal enthused. “She just has so much energy and is all over the place. As soon as the meet was over, she was begging me to do the 4 x 100 next meet. She just wants to add stuff. She’s just an awesome kid and everybody knows her story. So, watching her shine and watching her be successful is just so cool just that a kid can go through that and we can keep her hanging on long enough to have this sort of level of success.”

The busiest Longhorn, though, was another soph, Kynnedy Flannel, who won the 100 (11.19w) and 200 (22.66) — and also streaked an outdoor CL 22.47 in her heat. Before her individual heroics Flannel anchored a decisive 4×1 win, a 44.36 effort that left runner-up Baylor back at 44.82 on a chilly, rainy day.

Of earning the high-point award, Flannel said, “It is very special. I feel like we all put our bodies on the line, especially in this weather. We all went out there competing to the best of our ability. So it means a lot.”

Said Floréal, “The big word is ‘Texas Fight,’ and they showed plenty of that today.”
