Pac-12 Women — USC’s Speed Too Much For Oregon

LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA, May 14-16 — On a cool spring weekend USC’s women scored 162½ points to defeat runner-up Oregon by 11½. Led by a slew of points from their sprint crews, the Trojans built a formidable lead that Oregon could not overcome.

TeeTee Terry compiled 22 of those points, with hurdler Anna Cockrell contributing 20 and sprinter/jumper Lanae-Tava Thomas 19.

The final day started off with a mild upset of the Trojans when Oregon 4×1 anchor Danyel White held off a charge by Terry to squeak by 42.87–42.99.

Terry, however went on to win her third consecutive 100 title, taking down Oregon’s Kemba Nelson 11.10–11.29, then came back to lead a Trojan sweep of the 200 podium in a PR 22.72.

Cockrell began her day by winning her first conference 100H title, leading another Trojan 1-2-3 with her 12.79 win, ahead of Jasmine Jones (12.89) and Mecca McGlaston (13.23). She returned to the track a bit more than an hour later to take the long hurdles in an NCAA-leading 54.77 PR over UCLA’s Shae Anderson (55.21 PR). It was Cockrell’s third-straight conference crown and a school record, to boot.

Stanford’s Julia Heymach showed her versatility after PRing for 2nd in the 800 (2:02.91) to Colorado’s Sage Hurta (2:01.53), then coming back to set another PR (and MR) in her debut track 5000 on the track, running her final 800 in 2:17.35 to finish in 15:40.74.

Oregon’s Carmela Baez smashed the MR by 32 seconds in the 10,000 on Friday with her 32:38.73. On Saturday, fellow Duck Aneta Konieczek also set an MR, this time in the steeple, as she held off Washington’s Katie Rainsberger 9:36.74–9:38.84, PRs for both.

Arizona’s Samantha Noennig defended her crown in the shot with her 56-10 (17.32) put. Arizona State’s Jorinde van Klinken ended up 2nd at 56-7¼ (17.25) but came back the next day to PR at 205-4 (62.58) in the discus, taking the yearly collegiate lead.

USC head Caryl Smith Gilbert summed up her team’s performance by saying, “Today is an exciting day, to win the Pac-12 Championship and be 2nd on the men’s side at Loker Stadium with our new building; it’s quite historic in my opinion. There were so many great performances, with 14 Pac-12 titles, including school records and repeat winners. Both TeeTee and Anna won their third consecutive individual titles and going back-to-back-to-back is hard to do.

“It signals that we’re more than just a team, but a viable program that can compete for Pac-12 titles and national championships every year.”
