New Balance Nationals Boys — Kurt Powdar Cracks 13.30

GREENSBORO, NORTH CAROLINA, June 13–16 Florida recruits had an exceptionally good weekend at the New Balance Nationals. Hurdler Kurt Powdar (Smith, Chesapeake, Virginia) rocketed out to a quick lead in the highs and moved to No. 4 all-time with his 13.27. The future Gator ran 13.61 in his heat and also had to compete in the shuttle hurdles. “I had to keep a clear mind through all that,” he said. “I feel like that was the best race I have ever run.” He easily turned back Sincere Rhea (St. Augustine, Richland, New Jersey) and Warren Williams (West, Tracy, California), who ran 13.51 and 13.65.

Powdar’s future teammate Joe Fahnbulleh (Hopkins, Minnesota) lit up the sprints, first taking the 100 in a PR 10.35 on Friday, not long after anchoring his squad to a 41.34 runner-up finish in the 4 x 100. The next day he was after it again, hitting 20.67 to top Ashton Allen (Bullis, Potomac, Maryland) by 0.09. “I wanted it more,” said Fahnbulleh. “I’m OK if I die on the track. If I win, I win. Whoever wanted it more was going to win.”

A thrilling shot competition saw Tanner Duffin (Pius X, Atlanta) get past 69-feet twice but lose on the final throw. Junior Dylan Targgart (Coldwater, Michigan), who started the day with a PR of 66-7½, bettered that three times; his final 69-4¼ holding up for the win. “I knew if I hit the right positions, I could get a big one out there,” said Targgart.

Perhaps it was a measure of how good this meet has been over the years that despite a spate of nation-leading marks, few of the winners did much damage to the top 10 all-time lists. One impressive leader came from the Bullis 4×4, where the Maryland powerhouse led from the start, but faced spirited competition from Shiloh (Snellville, Georgia). On the anchor, Shiloh’s Omar Simpson busted a 46.36, but Bullis’s Ashton Allen managed to stay ahead with a 46.38 and deliver the win, 3:09.86–3:09.90.

Officials cracked down on the shuttle hurdles, using video review to DQ teams that left the zone early. Only 12 of 40 teams survived that replay, leaving Smith (Chesapeake, Virginia) the winner in 57.28, a performance good for No. 10 all-time. Yariel Soto (Centreville, Ohio) moved to No. 7 all-time in the decathlon with his 7509, winning by a massive 996-point margin.
