2024 Men’s 400 World Rankings

Over the course of 9½ weeks, Quincy Hall went on an undefeated tear that culminated in Paris and earned him No. 1. (KIRBY LEE/IMAGE OF SPORT)

THE TOUGHEST CHOICE OF THE YEAR? May well have been, with Quincy Hall oh-so-narrowly edging Matthew Hudson-Smith for the top spot as they moved to Nos. 4 & 5 on the all-time world list…

HALL LOOKED like anything but an Olympic favorite at the end of May, having scored DL finishes of 7th, 6th & 5th. The last of those was Oslo, won convincingly by Hudson-Smith…

THEN HALL WENT ON A RUN, ripping off 4 straight wins in 44.68, 44.17, 43.80 & 43.40 before calling it quits. Hudson-Smith, meanwhile, bolstered his case with his third DL win of the year and his third sub-44 (Hall already had a trio of his own). A good finish in the DL Final would have given No. 1 to MHS, but he pulled up and Hall claimed the preeminent position.
