2021 Men’s 400 World Rankings

Steven Gardiner was followed across the line in Tokyo by Anthony Zambrano, Kirani James & Michael Cherry. (GIANCARLO COLOMBO/PHOTO RUN)

OLYMPIC GOLD MEDALIST Steven Gardiner chose to call it quits after Tokyo and had only a single European meet pre-Games. Overall he had a thin record, but it was still better than anybody else’s, marred only by an early-season small-meet DNF… He thus repeated his No. 1 from ’19…

THE RUNNER-UP SPOT was a bit problematic, what with silver medalist Anthony Zambrano beating bronze medalist Kirani James in both their meetings. The Colombian, however, had no post-Games while James had a win and a pair of 2nds…

THE BATTLE FOR TOP AMERICAN — and the No. 4 spot — was also close, with OT winner Michael Norman notching a 4-1 overall record against Michael Cherry, who went on to win the DL final… Yearly list leader Randolph Ross and Vernon Norwood fill out the bottom end, giving the U.S. 4 of the 10 spots overall.

JAMES PASSED 3 LEGENDS on the all-time scoring compilation: Lee Evans, Herb McKenley & Alberto Juantorena. He’s now No. 5 on the list.
