2021 Men’s 20K Walk World Rankings

Italy’s Massimo Stano shocked the favorites on the streets of Sapporo. (JIRO MOCHIZUKI/PHOTO RUN)

THE OLYMPIC FORMCHART went out the window in the heat & humidity of Sapporo, as did fast times. Handling the conditions best was unheralded Massimo Stano, who was only No. 40 on the yearly list coming in. And still was going out as he needed just a 1:21:05 — the slowest winner since ’92 — to capture gold… And that was all he needed for No. 1, his 8th at Podébrady not being a factor one way or another…

THE OTHER TWO MEDALISTS, Koki Ikeda and favored Toshikazu Yamanishi, fill spots 2 & 3… The yearly leader at 1:16:54, Kaihua Wang could manage only 1:22:03 for 7th and that’s where he ended up.
