2021 Men’s 5000 World Rankings

It didn’t count as part of his 5000 leadership, but Joshua Cheptegei followed his Oly gold with the year’s fastest 2-miler, 8:09.55 at Pre. (KIRBY LEE/IMAGE OF SPORT)

TOKYO WAS THE DEEPEST race of the year and the Florence DL was the fastest, leaving Zürich’s DL Final race as not much of a factor…

JOSHUA CHEPTEGEI started on a down note, claiming only 6th in the Italian stop (Florence being a 1-year substitute for traditional fixture Rome). The WR holder, however, bounced back with the Olympic gold and thus claimed the top spot over podium mates Moh Ahmed and Paul Chelimo… Chelimo claimed the honor of first American for the fifth straight time…

OPTING FOR THE OLYMPIC 1500, Jakob Ingebrigtsen ran only a single 5, but that was the Florence win in what turned out to be the year’s fastest time. That garnered him No. 4 to go with his 1500 No. 1, all while still just 20 (he turned 21 in September).
