2021 Men’s 100 World Rankings

Lamont Marcell Jacobs didn’t win many races, but he won the biggest one, claiming Olympic gold over Fred Kerley & Andre De Grasse. (KIRBY LEE/IMAGE OF SPORT)

WEARING THE BLUE of Italy and coming out of the blue was Olympic gold medalist Lamont Marcell Jacobs, who became the first No. 1 without a previous appearance in the Rankings since one Usain Bolt in ’08… He’s also the first Italian scorer since Stefano Tilli in ’84 and the nation’s first top 100 Ranker ever…

DESPITE HIS TOKYO CREDENTIAL he was a very narrow choice as No. 1, having no post-Olympic competitions and a thin season that left him without a single Diamond League win. But he did beat silver medalist Fred Kerley in one of those DL races, making him 2-0 on the year for a tight overall decision… Kerley’s case was hurt by an OT 3rd, but he was clearly the best in the post-Tokyo segment with Brussels and Zürich wins and a Eugene 2nd…

VETERAN JUSTIN GATLIN added enough points to his all-time total to tie Linford Christie for No. 3 at 93. They trail just Carl Lewis (123) & Asafa Powell (98). It’s also Gatlin’s 11th appearance, trailing only Lewis (16), Powell (13) & Christie (12).
