2025 Men’s Discus World Rankings

Repeat No. 1 Mykolas Alekna was age-21 for all but one of his meets in ’24 and 22 for all of his pre-Worlds ’25 meets. The last No. 1 so precocious? East German Wolfgang Schmidt, who was 21 in ’75. (GERRY McEVOY)

THE COMETHROUGH performance of the year was unleashed by Daniel Ståhl in winning WC gold. That wasn’t the farthest throw of the year by any means. That honor went to Mykolas Alekna, who twice broke the World Record in becoming the first to claim a new all-time best 2 years in a row in 60 years (Ludvík Daněk 1964–65)…

ALEKNA CLAIMED SILVER in Tokyo, but that was only 1 of his 3 losses all year. He ended up 4–0 over Kristjan Čeh and 4–1 against Ståhl to easily claim a repeat No. 1. Čeh previously won in ’22 and Ståhl in ’19, ’21 & ’23…

IN THE BATTLE FOR the runner-up position, Čeh and Ståhl were very close, the Slovenian having a solid 6–3 margin with their head-to-heads…

THE AMERICAN TRIO all failed to advance to the Tokyo final, but Sam Mattis had enough decent exposure elsewhere to sneak into the No. 10 spot. That made him the U.S. No. 1 for the fourth time in five years.
