2023 Men’s 5000 World Rankings

No. 6 in the 1500 in ’21 & ’22, and having rated No. 8 at 5000 last year, Mohamed Katir tops the longer event this time. (MARK SHEARMAN)

THE BIGGEST PROBLEM was figuring out where to place Jakob Ingebrigtsen. To be sure, he was the world champion, but that 13:11 was his only race, and it left him at No. 50 (!) on the yearly list, so we slotted him at No. 4…

THE EVENT WAS unusually difficult to sort out because there was no 5000 in the DL Final. Instead a 3000 was run with Ingebrigtsen chasing the WR and moving to No. 3 on the all-time list…

NO MAJOR PLAYER WAS UNDEFEATED and nobody was able to win a pair of DL races (the Zürich 5 was non-DL). Best of the bunch was WC silver medalist Mohamed Katir, beaten by Ingebrigtsen by just 0.14 and with a fine win-loss record against other contenders… The U.S. failed to earn a spot for the first time since ’08.
