2018 Men’s Javelin World Rankings

Germany scored the most points in the event’s history, led by Andreas Hofmann (No. 1), Thomas Röhler (No. 2) & Johannes Vetter (No. 4). Additionally, Julian Weber took No. 7. (JEFF COHEN)

FOR THE SECOND YEAR in a row Germany put up a 1–2 in the javelin, Andreas Hoffman & Thomas Röhler following up last year’s finish by Johannes Vetter (No. 4 this time) and Röhler. Add in Julian Weber at No. 7 and Germany—which became the first nation ever to have 4 members of the 300-foot club—totaled a record 30 points, eclipsing the former best of 27 by Finland in ’75…

THE CHOICE between Hoffman and Röhler for the top spot was a tight one, as there was conflicting evidence. Not ones to duck competition, they met a full dozen times, splitting things right down the middle, 6-6. Röhler won the important European title, but his record in DL meets (1, 1, 3, 4, 4) was inferior to Hoffman’s (1, 1, 2, 3, 3), with the latter winning the crucial DL Final… Hofmann’s top 5 meets averaged a spectacular 298-5 (90.97)… Estonia’s Magnus Kirt was a very strong No. 3, forging a 6-4 record against Röhler, but having an inferior DL string of 1, 2, 3, 5, 6…

THE U.S. DROUGHT stretched to 10 years, the last American score coming from Breaux Greer at No. 3 in ’07… Traditional powerhouse Finland missed for only the fifth time in 72 years of the Rankings, joining ’11, ’85, ’62 & ’60.
