Prize Recruit — Britton Wilson (Tennessee)

TENNESSEE HAS ADDED points potential for Conference and National meets in a range of events with the addition of blue-chipper Britton Wilson (Godwin, Henrico, Virginia). Wilson rated as No. 1 All-America in the long hurdles last season, leading the lists in both the 300 (40.78) and 400 (56.36 for No. 7 on the all-time list) variants. And her 52.06 in the flat 400 put her No. 4 on the yearly list and she also sprinted 23.59. What Vol coach Beth Alford-Sullivan learned quickly was that Wilson also brings musical talent.
When the hurdle ace called to commit to Tennessee, says the coach, “She sang Rocky Top to me.” Once on campus this fall, Wilson took her pipes public to belt out the national anthem. “Yeah,” Wilson says chuckling. “Me and my friend [soph teammate Alonie Sutton], we sang the national anthem at a couple of games. I think it was a soccer game and a cross country meet. And yeah, we might be able to sing for a basketball game too.”
Wilson wasted little time in making herself a part of the “home-like feel” she says attracted her to Knoxville and has her already thinking, “I can’t imagine being anywhere else.” She explains, “I got that feeling only at Tennessee” and before this frosh school year began she was already trading musical messages with long jumper Sutton.
“Alonie knew that I was very interested in singing ’cause I used to send her videos before I got to campus and that’s how we became like crazy friends. Then once I got here they asked Alonie to sing the national anthem because she sang it last year at a cross country meet, and she was like, ‘OK, could Britton sing with me?’ And they were like, ‘I don’t see why not.’ So we sang together and we actually did really well and it kind of became a thing and we got asked to sing at another game.”
A 10-time State champ outdoors and in, Wilson’s debut as a singer predated her picking up the barrier event: “At the very end of my junior year, my coach said, ‘Do you want to try the hurdles?’ and I was like, ‘OK.’ So we tried it and I think I ran like 58 or 59 or something.” Before long, she says, “We began to get hurdle technique down and just get way better at it.” Better enough to place 5th at the ’18 USATF Junior Champs, which she won on her return to the meet this past summer.
With Vol assistants David Neville and Ken Harnden—erstwhile world-class performers at 400 and 400H themselves—providing the event coaching, something of a hurdles dream team is coalescing in Knoxville. “We have tagged her up with Vanessa Watson so they both have great training partners,” Alford-Sullivan says. Watson (Spencerport, New York), rated as our No. 2 All-America in the long hurdles, placing 2nd to Wilson at New Balance Nationals and 3rd behind her at the Juniors.
As the duo step through their training paces this school year, Wilson says, “I definitely will be watching hours and hours of Sydney and Dalilah.” Certainly since the recent World Championships, no last name clarification is needed for the two leaders on the all-time list. “Both of them, I look up to a lot,” Wilson says, “and I’ve talked to them through Instagram and stuff and they’re like so nice and they’re so cool.”
One can guess, probably accurately, what Wilson means when she says of the Tennessee coaches, “I know they can take me to where I want to be in the future.”
