Texas Relays Women — Sprint Medley CR For A&M

A thrilling SMR homestretch battle found Avi’Tal Wilson-Perteete of A&M holding off Brooke Jaworski as both teams broke the CR. (KIRBY LEE/IMAGE OF SPORT)

AUSTIN, TEXAS, March 23-26 — What’s better than a Collegiate Record? How about two teams finishing under the old standard. That’s what the Texas A&M and Texas sprint medley foursomes did at the Texas Relays, both finishing under the existing mark of 3:39.04 set by another Aggie foursome 5 years ago.

Here A&M ran 3:38.93 and Texas turned in a 3:38.95 as Avi’Tal Wilson-Perteete held off the hosts’ Brooke Jaworski in a furious homestretch battle. Wilson-Perteete was preceded by Tierra Robinson-Jones, Laila Owens and Charokee Young.

Texas did brilliant work in winning the 4×1, 4×2 and 4×4, denting the all-time lists in each of the events. The Longhorns ran “only” 42.83 in the 4×1 after becoming the No. 6 school ever with a 42.42 heat.

The 4×2 scared Oregon’s CR of 1:28.78 with the second-fastest collegiate time ever (and No. 6 in the world), 1:29.03.

To wrap the meet up Texas finished within shouting distance of A&M’s CR of 3:22.34 with a 3:22.94. A&M’s runner-up squad produced the No. 4 collegiate time ever, 3:23.30.

The women produced two other records, the first of them coming when Florida soph Anna Hall became the highest-scoring U.S.-born heptathlete ever, her 6412-point total eclipsing the 6390 scored by legendary Jackie Joyner-Kersee of UCLA back in ’83.

Anna Hall finally succeeded Jackie Joyner-Kersee as the holder of the American-born CR in the heptathlon. (ERROL ANDERSON/THE SPORTING IMAGE)

In a PR-driven performance Hall hurdled a lifetime best 13.41, high jumped 5-9¾ (1.77), put the shot a PR 44-1½ (13.45) and ran the 200 in a PR 23.81 for a first-day total of 3760. That left her 25 points up on JJK’s pace.

On the second day Hall long jumped a PR 20‑5¼ (6.23), threw the jav 134-5 (40.98) and finished off with an 800 PR of 2:04.61 to sew up the record.

The other recordsetter was prep vaulting phenom Amanda Moll (Capital, Olympia, Washington). Co-holder of the highest HS vault ever at 14-9 (4.50), the 17-year-old junior sailed mightily over 14-9½ (4.51) on her third try.

That not only gave her sole possession of the HS best, it also rated as an American Junior (U20) Record and World and American Youth (U18) records.

Friendly winds helped provide for notable times on the sprint straight.

At the pro level, Olympian Gabby Thomas scored a double, winning the 100 in 10.92w (2.9mps) and 200 (3.1) in the =No. 5 all-conditions U.S. time, 21.69w. Close behind, Tamara Clark came up with the =No. 7 mark, 21.72w, with hurdler Keni Harrison 3rd in 22.19w. Harrison also produced the No. 8 a-c U.S. hurdle time ever, 12.32w (3.9).

Among the collegians, a 2.8 breeze helped USC’s Celera Barnes (10.82w) and Arkansas’s Jada Baylark (10.83w) to Nos. 5 and 6 on the all-time a-c collegiate 100 list.

And in the 100H (2.5), LSU’s Alia Armstrong ripped off the fastest a-c collegiate time ever, 12.33w. Behind her, A&M’s Kaylah Robinson rose to No. 8 with her 12.49w.
