NCAA Women’s 100 Hurdles — Camacho-Quinn Makes The Most Of Tough Situation

Jasmine Camacho-Quinn brought with her a world-leading 12.40 effort, just 0.01 off the Collegiate Record, but there would be no fast times in the final here. Running under deplorable conditions, the favored Kentucky junior stormed to victory in the tall-hurdle event in 12.70, getting the best of Purdue senior Devynne Charlton (12.77).

Soph Cortney Jones of Florida State was able to grab the bronze—barely—over Pedrya Seymour of Texas as both clocked 13.04s, Jones getting the nod by 0.002. Arkansas’s Janeek Brown, the lone frosh in the field, finished 5th in 13.05. LSU’s Tonea Marshall started well, but slipped to 6th (13.09). Oregon’s Alaysha Johnson, who was hoping for better in front of her home crowd, clocked 13.22, finishing ahead of Rushelle Burton (13.51) who was wearing the burnt orange of Texas.

Officials moved the final across the track to the backstretch to take advantage of the prevailing south winds. But while the breeze of 0.9 was not a factor in the race, there were two stand-up calls before the race got underway, which had to be distracting to the field.

When asked about conditions after the race, Camacho-Quinn, who regained the title she had won as a frosh in ’16, conceded that the delays were nerve-racking, but that “staying calm and maintaining focus” were key. She shrugged off the weather as being part of the package.

The semis—led by Camacho-Quinn’s 12.54, the No. 6 time in collegiate history—had hinted at big things to come… had the weather cooperated. Anna Cockrell of USC (12.88) Alexis Duncan of Tennessee (12.93) and Mecca McGlaston of USC (12.98) became the three fastest non-qualifiers in meet history.
