Arcadia Girls — Hana Moll Joins 15-Foot Club

Predicting which Moll twin will vault higher at a meet is risky business. This time it was Hana, now a 15-footer like Amanda. (BILL LEUNG)

ARCADIA, CALIFORNIA, April 07–08 — Last year’s Arcadia vault champ Amanda Moll (Capital, Olympia, Washington) was expecting to be joined by twin Hana midway through the competition on this perfect evening. But just as Hana was coming in, Amanda, the absolute recordholder at 15-1½, was bowing out. Both Molls had 2 misses at 13-9 and on try No. 3, Hana made hers, but Amanda did not.

Unfettered, Hana felt the groove and only needed one attempt at 14-3. She then had the bar raised to 14-10 — a half-inch above the highest-ever outdoor prep setting cleared by Amanda just over a year ago. She cleared on her second try.

Knowing the psychological advantage of breaking barriers, Moll had the bar raised 2 inches, so that she could try and put 15-feet behind her.

It didn’t take long, as she popped over on her first attempt, giving her 2 records within 10 minutes, joining her sister as the only HS girls to ever clear the coveted height and solidifying their hold on positions 1 and 2 on the all-time list, both indoors and out.

Track action was spotlighted by junior Mia Brahe-Pedersen (Lake Oswego, Oregon), who dominated the sprints with list-leading results, taking the 100 in 11.17 and 200 in 23.01, making up for her runner-up finishes from last year.

Riverside North’s MacKenzie Browne became another outdoor leader, in the 800, after sitting behind Ali Ince (Normal, Illinois) before launching her kick with 200 to go to edge Ince 2:03.07–2:03.17.

Other list leaders included Sadie Engelhardt (Ventura) who took care of business in the mile, leading wire-to-wire to finish comfortably ahead of fellow soph Jane Hedengren (Timpview, Provo, Utah), 4:36.26–4:41.08 and Sydnie Vanek (Clovis) who leapt 20-7½ to take the long jump.

In another wire-to-wire race Irene Riggs (Morgantown, West Virginia) continued her winning ways. She took down soph Hanne Thomsen (Montgomery, Santa Rosa, California) 9:52.66–9:55.31.
