Arcadia Boys — More Heroics From Colin Sahlman

ARCADIA, CALIFORNIA, April 08-09 — On a day when everyone was anticipating an historic run at the Arcadia Invitational by Newbury Park in the 3200, the California distance powerhouse did not disappoint, with 4 of its runners dipping under 9:00, led by senior Colin Sahlman, whose 8:34.99 shattered the meet record by 5 seconds. Overall, the first 8 finished under 8:50 and 23 broke 9:00.

A swift first 400 (60.8) by Salhman’s teammate, Leo Young, set the stage for a fast time, with Sahlman, Leo’s twin brother Lex and Sahlman’s younger brother Aaron up front, but a 67.2 second lap (2:08.0) wasn’t planned and after 3:13.8 at 1200 (65.3), Colin decided it was time to go. He was followed by Lex and the two separated themselves from the pack.

Colin passed 1600 in 4:18.5 (64.7) and 2000 in 5:24.5 (66.0) then sensing the pacing was slipping, Lex took over, but only covered lap 6 in 67.0 (6:31.5). Lex increased the pace and crossed the penultimate lap in 64.5 (7:36.0).

Colin followed Lex until to 300 to go and then took off. Lex responded, but could not catch Colin as he sped to the finish. Colin finished in the equivalent of an 8:37.98 for 2M —the No. 6 performance ever — after his 58.7 final circuit. Lex was 2nd in 8:35.72, followed by 6 who finished under 8:50.

Said the winner, “Obviously, I wanted to go fast, around that 8:30 mark, but we tried to start off each of us taking a lap and it didn’t really stay consistent, so that kind of threw off the whole thing.”

Double winners with impressive marks included Great Oak’s JC Stevenson in the long jump (24-9½) and triple jump (48-3¾), Murrieta Mesa’s Cade Moran in the discus (198-4) and shot (66-10 outdoor leader) and Anaheim Servite sprinter Max Thomas’s 10.40/20.97.

Friday’s “Burning Relays” produced a pair of national outdoor leaders: St. John Bosco’s 1:24.14 in the 4 x 200 and American Fork’s 17:21.16 for the 4 x 1600.
