How Will The 2022 Diamond League Work?

Many of the sport’s biggest names got to celebrate Diamond League wins in Zürich last September. (JIRO MOCHIZUKI)

THROUGH NO FAULT OF ITS OWN, not since the ’19 edition has the Wanda Diamond League been able to carry off its full schedule of meets.

Which brings us to ’22, with 13 preliminary meets (including Shenzen, China, for the first time) creating the fields for the big 2-day finale in Zürich. The Swiss city will have 32 events, 7 of them staged as street events on the first day.

The other 13 meets will have 14 DL events (additional non-DL events are also allowed) each; 9 of those meets will have 7 events for each sex, with Doha & Oslo having an 8 men/6 women split and Birmingham & Shanghai being set up as 6/8.

The staging of events will vary in number: 6 events will be held 8 times each for men and women (100, 400, 800, 1500, 3000, 400H), 4 events 7 times (200, 110/100H, HJ, PV), 1 event 6 times (steeple), 5 events 5 times (LJ, TJ, SP, DT, JT).

The hammer, walks and multis will continue to have their own Challenge series set apart from the DL.

Overall, there will be $7M on offer in DL prize money. At every series meet a total of $25,000 will be available for each discipline, paid out to the first 8 places as $10K, $6K, $3.5K, $2K, $1.25K, $1K, $750, $500.

In the Final, the winner will receive $30,000, with another $30,000 spread among the other placers as $12K, $7K, $4K, $2.5K, $2K, $1.5K, $1K. (In all meets there will also be rewards for 9th–12th finishers in distance races and 9th-place finishers in lane races.)

Winners of DL Final competitions will also receive a Diamond Trophy and be eligible for a Wild Card entry to the ’23 World Championships.
