Texas Relays Men — Georgia Close To A Pair Of CRs

AUSTIN, TEXAS, March 29–April 01 — Unlike the women, the Texas Relays men did not rewrite the college record books. But several performers did lay claim to favorite status for June, when they’ll return to Austin for the NCAA Outdoor Championship.

The most startling were Georgia’s relay squads, posting the Nos. 2 and 3 collegiate clockings in history in the 4 x 400 and 4 x 200, respectively.

In the longer relay, the Bulldogs’ 2:58.82 was 0.29 shy of Florida’s 2022 standard. Elija Godwin and Matthew Boling combined for 1:28.50 on the first two legs (44.25 average), Caleb Cavanaugh carried third in 45.53, and frosh Will Sumner closed at 44.80.

Sumner had the lead, lost it, then won it back as a trio broke three minutes (Alabama 2:59.15 and UCLA 2:59.25). It was the first race in history with three college teams under 3:00.

In the 4 x 200, Keshaun Black, Boling, Christopher Morales Williams, and Godwin’s 1:20.22 barely missed the 1:20.20 jointly held by TCU and Tennessee. (TCU actually clocked three under 1:20, but all were later disqualified for eligibility violations.)

“We were ready to run it,” Boling said of Georgia’s staggering 4×4. “It was fun to be able to do it here at such a great track.”

Myers Stadium holds fond memories for Boling. In 2019, the Texas native won three high school state titles here, including a 10.13 national federation record and a dramatic 44.74 anchor in the 4×4.

“It’s great,” Boling said of his return. “I haven’t been to Texas in a while. I haven’t run here since high school, so to be able to show out on a track with so many supporters has been a blessing.”

Other collegiate list rewrites came from Texas’ Leo Neugebauer (decathlon, No. 5 all-time), Auburn frosh Keyshawn Strachan (javelin, No. 4 performer), and Stephen F. Austin’s Branson Ellis (pole vault, No. 8 performer).

The Bahamian Strachan — a U20 World bronze medalist — finally flew past the 80-meter barrier with a 276-6 (84.27) toss, a sizable improvement from his previous best of 262-1 (79.89).

However, his only other legal throw was a mere 238-11 (72.82): “That’s my number one goal, I’m working on consistency right now.”

Consistency was not a problem for Neugebauer. His 8478 PR pushed him past Longhorn legend Trey Hardee on the college list. He notched new PRs in the 100 (10.75), 110H (14.33), vault (16-8¾/5.10), and shot (54-8/16.66).

The prospect of competing on his home track for NCAA Outdoors had the German excited.

“It’s going to have a huge effect,” he said. “This feels almost like a rehearsal for nationals.”

The pole vault also felt like a rehearsal for June, with a stellar duel between Ellis and indoor champ Zach Bradford of Texas Tech. Both were perfect until 19-¾ (5.81), when Ellis missed. Bradford cleared on his first attempt, so Ellis passed up to 19-2¾ (5.86). Ellis took the lead with a narrow second-attempt make (the bar bounced but stayed) and Bradford needed three. Both went out at 19-4¾ (5.91).

“I never get any bar love,” Ellis laughed about his close call on the winning clearance. “It was nice to hit one and have it stay up.”
