NCAA Indoor Champs — Men’s Field

VIRGINIA BEACH, VIRGINIA, March 14–15 — The two NCAA men’s throws saw significant action as Wyoming senior Daniel Reynolds lofted a meet record in the weight and junior putter Tarik Robinson-O’Hagan of Ole Miss, the only repeat men’s titlist (on field or track) from ’24, scored his third consecutive national crown following indoor/outdoor wins last year.

In the weight’s first round, Reynolds came within 1¼ inches of the 10-year-old MR by Wisconsin’s Michael Lihrman with 80-9 (24.61) but then proceeded to smash it in round 4 with 82-3½ (25.08). The standard-breaker measured ½-inch (2cm) longer than Reynolds’ previous best from the Mountain West Champs 2 weeks earlier and carried him up to No. 2 all-time among collegians, strengthening his status as No. 7 American all-time.

“We are very proud of the way Daniel stepped up in a big pressure situation,” said Wyoming throws coach Paul Barrett of the first Poke to win an indoor or outdoor title since 400 hurdler Shauna Smith in ’05. “He came in as the national leader and came out swinging on his first attempt. I can’t think of a better person to represent UW with class and humility. He is a special Cowboy who loves his university, state and track & field program. One of the best to ever wear the Brown & Gold.”

Northridge’s ’24 runner-up Trey Knight found himself in 2nd again after his 80-4¼ (24.49) in round 5 bettered the second-round heave of Ryan Johnson, 80-3¾ (24.48).

Junior Tarik Robinson-O’Hagan has now won three shot titles and could win three more. (KIRBY LEE/IMAGE OF SPORT)

Robinson-O’Hagan, who had PRed at 69-3¼ (21.11) in February, wasted no time in the ring, launching 67-2¾ (20.49) in the first round to settle matters. “Yes! Yes!” he shouted bouncing out of the circle and bumping his fists together — although there was a scare in round 6.

Wisconsin’s Jason Swarens landed a PR 66-11¼ (20.40) in round 5 to overtake 2nd, but then in the sixth, it was South Carolina senior Christopher Licata who must have sent a shiver down Robinson-O’Hagan’s spine with his oh-so-close 67-1½ (20.46) PR in the final frame.

Duke senior vault Olympian Simen Guttormsen followed in the winning footsteps of his older brother. Guttormsen cleared an indoor personal best as the only one to better 18-8¾ (5.71), improving his under-a-roof PR by 1½ inches, and thus adding to the family coffers shared with brother Sondre, who won the indoor title in ’22 & ’23, and once outdoors in ’22. This was the younger Guttormsen’s second appearance at the Indoor after a 4th-place showing for Princeton in ’22.

South Florida’s Kobe Babin cleared a PR 18-6¾ (5.66) on his first attempt to secure 2nd over Akron’s Hunter Garretson, who needed 3 tries at the same height. Texas A&M’s list-leading 19-footer Aleksandr Solovev finished 4th.

Texas senior Kelsey Daniel took the long jump lead in round 2 with 26-1¾ (7.97), then reached PRs of 26-7¼ (8.11) and 26-9¼ (8.16) in frames 4 and 5.

The fourth round also saw Arkansas’ Henry Kiner stretch 25-11½ (7.91) to momentarily land in runner-up position place, only to be bested by Oklahoma’s Nikaoli Williams in the fifth with 26-1½ (7.96).

“Last year [at] Nationals, I let the nerves interfere with my ability to go out and jump,” Daniel said. “Being in that environment, you learn from it. So coming into this year, I know what to do, how to keep myself calm and just to go out there and execute.”

With an indoor PR, Nebraska senior Tyus Wilson claimed the high jump title at 7-5¾ (2.28).

He secured his victory with a third attempt clearance of 7-3¼ (2.22) over 6 others who were log-jammed at 7-2¼ (2.19). Georgia soph Riyon Rankin and Ole Miss junior Arvesta Troupe rounded out the top 3.

Missouri soph Jonathan Seremes, 3-jumped a 55-11 (17.04) lifetime best over Nebraska’s Micaylon Moore, whose 54-2½ (16.52) was also a PR. Oklahoma’s Brandon Green rounded out the top 3 with 54-1¾ (16.50).

Mississippi State multi-eventer Peyton Bair led things off in the hept with a 6.74 PR in the 60, followed by BYU’s Ben Barton (6.87) and Miami’s Edgar Campre (6.89).

In the long jump, Bair could only muster 22-8½ (6.92), while Barton, Arkansas’s Jack Turner, Campre and Virginia Tech’s Nathaniel Paris, would knocked Bair down to 5th.

Campre’s 50-10¼ (15.50) shot PR catapulted him to the top, while Bair moved back up, all the way to 2nd, with 47-3¾ (14.42), trailed most closely by Turner and Barton.

Nebraska’s Tyus Wilson, high jump 3rd-placer at the Olympic Trials last summer, won with an indoor PR. (KIRBY LEE/IMAGE OF SPORT)

Day 1 finished after the high jump with Bair leading Barton by 17 and Campre (65 points back) and Turner (68 back) lurking.

Day 2 began with a 7.88 PR by Campre in the 60H and he now trailed Barton by 43 with Bair 2nd (11 behind) and Turner sitting in 4th.

Bair vaulted 15-11¾ (4.87) to take the lead at 5207, yet Campre was breathing down his neck after his 16-3½ (4.97) PR left him 2 points shy.

Going into the 1000, Campre would need a PR not only to overtake Bair, but to hold on in 2nd. Going off PRs, Bair’s 2:42.14 looked to be more than enough to hold off any charge by Campre, whose kilo best is 2:47.67.

It was not to be, as Bair secured victory with his 2:46.21 and 6013 total as Campre came home in 2:53.56.

Turner, meanwhile, started in 4th, but after winning the 1000 in a PR 2:35.49 jumped up to 2nd at 5962, dropping Campre (5934) into 3rd and bumping Barton (5898) down to 4th.
