Millrose Games HS — National 60 Record For Jackson

NEW YORK CITY, January 29 — The Millrose Games featured a full slate of prep events, but the day’s top HS mark came in one of the Armory’s pro races.

Shawnti Jackson (Wakefield, Raleigh) finished 3rd in the women’s 60 and broke the national record with her 7.18 clocking. That sliced a single 100th off the mark set by Ashley Owens in ’04 and tied by Tamari Davis in ’20.

“I didn’t really think about the pros too much, I was just there to run my own race,” said Jackson, who finished ahead of Olympians Briana Williams, Gabby Thomas and English Gardner. “That was a 10 out of 10 race. I did everything I was supposed to and executed well.”

In the high school section, Kaila Jackson (Renaissance, Detroit) won in 7.31, while Terrell Robinson (Mt Tabor, Winston-Salem, NC) took the boys race in 6.72.

Hana Moll (Capital, Olympia, Washington) won the vault at 14-7¼ (4.45), then attempted 14-9½ (4.51), which would have added a half-inch to the HSR. Twin sister Amanda took 2nd, clearing 13-9 ¼ (4.20).

Roisin Willis (Stevens Point, Wisconsin) and Sophia Gorriaran (Brown, Providence, Rhode Island) acquitted themselves well in the women’s pro 800, finishing 4th and 5th in 2:03.28 and 2:03.66 for the Nos. 7 & 9 performances ever.

Gavin Sherry (Conard, West Hartford, Connecticut) broke the meet record in the boys mile, his 4:06.58 taking down the 4:07.24 set by Noah Affolder in ’17. Technically, however, he wasn’t the fastest prep of the day. Gary Martin (Wood, Warminster, Pennsylvania) set a PR 4:05.47 to finish 8th in the open section of the professional men’s race.

Olympic Trials 800 semifinalist Juliette Whittaker (Mt. de Sales, Catonsville, Maryland) held off Riley Stewart (Cherry Creek, Greenwood Village, Colorado) and Mia Cochran (Moon Area, Moon Township, Pennsylvania) to win the girls mile in 4:47.14.

“It’s a pretty scary meet to walk into, especially when you’re surrounded by all these pros you look up to, and the crowds are always so loud,” said Whittaker, the runner-up in this race in ’20, the last time the meet was held. “This time I was able to channel my nerves a bit more and use them to my benefit.”
