Nike Outdoor Nationals — A New Look For Big HS Meet

Nathan Green had an impressive weekend, winning the Nike mile in 4:03.30 the day after he won in Seattle at 4:01.96. (LOGAN HANNIGAN-DOWNS)

EUGENE, OREGON, June 30-July 03 — With a new world-class venue and a new sponsor, the NSAF’s Nike Outdoor Nationals delivered some great high school competition to Hayward Field on the weekend after the conclusion of the Olympic Trials.

The Trials heat wave had mostly dissipated as temps ranged from the mid-70s to low-90s. The fields were anything but typical, as the move across the country after 15 editions in Greensboro, North Carolina, may have shifted the meet to more of a West Coast orientation, though the ongoing pandemic may have been a crucial factor in limiting attendance from some areas.

In any case, new sponsor Nike had to have been pleased by a 4-day festival that featured 14 nation-leading marks, one of them a national record.

The powerhouse Saratoga Springs girls from New York took down the 4 x Mile best in a big way, clocking 19:40.67 to slice more than 16 seconds from the old best of 19:56.75 set by Suffern, New York, in ’07. Junior Ella Kurto led off at 4:52.82, handing off behind the 4:52.02 of Niwot, Colorado, senior Lucca Fulkerson, who would win the 2M the next day in 10:19.95.

Saratoga Springs stayed close to Niwot on the second leg, senior Alycia Hart (4:57.74) handing off a stride behind the Coloradans. Then junior Mackenzie Hart (4:55.84) broke away. On anchor, frosh Emily Bush clocked 4:54.26 and was able to hold off the 4:52.28 of Niwot’s Madison Shults, whose team also finished well under the old record at 19:45.37.

“I made a gap,” said the younger Hart, “and Emily kept that gap and held them off.”

On the boys’ side, the most impressive individual performances were generally one-offs, as no one scored a double win on the track. Terrence Muex (Carman-Ainsworth, Flint, Michigan) was the unlooked-for winner of the 400 in a nation-leading 46.13, a 0.39 improvement on his incoming PR of 46.52, which itself was a massive jump from his previous best of 47.97.

“I saw someone running next to me,” said Muex. “That’s when I knew that I had to push it if I wanted to win.”

In the mile, Nathan Green (Borah, Boise, Idaho) came down I-5 from Seattle where he had won the Brooks PR race the previous day. Here he blasted a 55.48 final quarter to win in 4:03.30 over Niwot’s Zane Bergen (4:03.90) in the meet’s final race.

Jordan Anthony (Tylertown, Mississippi) captured the 100 in 10.21 (wind 1.9) but his late charge in the 200 fell short of a surprising 20.49 barely windy (2.1) performance by Brandon Miller (Fenton, Michigan). Anthony clocked 20.57 in 2nd.

On the field, only Zane Forist (Carson City-Crystal, Carson City, Michigan) was able to successfully double. On the meet’s first day he won the discus at 205-9 then came back with a 64-7¼ win in the shot.

The only dual relay wins for the boys went to Free Academy (Newburgh, NY), taking the 4×4 (3:17.59) and 1000 medley (1:54.75).

The girls didn’t get any individual doublers at all. Jasmine Montgomery (Reagan, San Antonio) took the 100 in 11.44 ahead of Samirah Moody (Rivers, Weston, Massachusetts), who ran 11.51. Moody came back to win the 200 in 23.32.

Addison Wiley (North, Huntington, Indiana) captured the mile in 4:42.78 over 800 star Sophia Gorriaran (Brown, Providence), who clocked 4:43.74. In the 5000, youth was served as Ellie Shea (Belmont, Massachusetts) won by 40m in 16:10.42, a national frosh-class record.

Hana Moll (Capital, Olympia, Washington) took the vault at 14-4 and Sarah Marvin (Byron, Michigan) the shot with her 50-7½.

The dominant girls relay school was distance-strong Niwot, which won the 4×8 (8:52.48), distance medley (11:33.51) and surprised Michigan’s Oak Park with a 3:42.72–3:43.62 win in the 4×4.
