NCAA Men’s Decathlon — A Memorable 3-Way

Overall winner Ayden Owens-Delerme produced the fastest collegiate deca 400 ever, 46.10. (ERROL ANDERSON/THE SPORTING IMAGE)

THIS 10-EVENTER was one for the recordbooks. The two most recent setters of the Collegiate Record — both Pennsylvania natives born on the same day (May 28, 2000) — met for the first time in a decathlon since the ’18 World Juniors.

Kyle Garland of Georgia scintillated a month ago at the USATF Championships, PRing by more than 500 points at 8720. That mark broke the CR of 8528 by Ayden Owens-Delerme of Arkansas at April’s Mt. SAC Relays.

100: AOD (10.41) had the fastest time, while Garland tied his PR at 10.63 and Leo Neugebauer of Texas registered a lifetime best of 10.87.

Long Jump: Neugebauer was the farthest at 24-11¼ (7.60), but Garland (24-7¾/7.51) and Owens (23-11/7.29) led the 2-event totals at 1882 and 1879. An unfortunate casualty was Georgia’s Johannes Erm, the ’19 winner, who didn’t start the event.

Shot: Neugebauer was again the best, with a PR of 52-6 (16.00). Garland reached 50-4½ (15.35), Owens-Delerme a PR 49-6¼ (15.09). Neugebauer had the lead at 2701 over Garland (2693) and Owens-Delerme (2674).

High Jump: Neugebauer (=PR 6-9½/2.07) maintained the lead with 3569, just ahead of Garland (3561) with Owens-Delerme (3487) still close. AOD cleared an outdoor PR of 6-7 (2.01), while Garland scaled 6-9½ (2.07).

400: Owens-Delerme regained the lead with a PR 46.10, fastest-ever by a collegian in a dec. Garland was just 0.04 seconds off his PR at 48.60. Owens-Delerme now led the way with 4490 points, while Garland (4441) and Neugebauer (4435) were close behind.

110H: Garland (13.87) outdueled Owens-Delerme (13.93) with the two fastest times as the Razorback’s lead was now 42. Neugebauer ran 14.67, close to his PR of 14.59, and remained in 3rd.

Discus: Many throwers had difficulties, but AOD wasn’t one of them. He raised his PR twice, ultimately to 151-9 (46.25) and continued to lead with 6267 points after 7 events. Neugebauer had the best effort, 166-7 (50.77) and moved into 2nd 56 points behind. Garland reached only 137-9 (42.00) slipping to 3rd, 130 points out of the lead.

Vault: Neugebauer moved back into the lead as he and Garland both cleared 15-9¼ (4.81). Owens managed 14-9½ (4.51) and held 2nd, 33 points behind while Garland was now another 41 back.

Javelin: Owens-Delerme regained the lead with a PR of 183-11 (56.07) to raise his score to 7709. Neugebauer also PRed at 174-3/53.12 and was just 11 points back at 7698, while Garland remained in third at 7665 after a throw of 183-4/55.88.

1500: Owens-Delerme seemed a lock to win the title, owning the fastest PR in the field at 4:13.17. He didn’t need to run anywhere close to that and settled for a 4:29.54 to close out his MR-tying score of 8457, joining Ashton Eaton of Oregon from ’10.

Neugebauer owned a 33-point lead over Garland coming in. Garland would have to beat the Longhorn by nearly 5 seconds to overtake him, but Neugebauer didn’t let that happen as he maintained close contact. Garland ran 4:41.96 and Neugebauer 4:42.68, PRs for both, as Neugebauer (8362) finished 29 up on Garland (8333).
