GÖTZIS, AUSTRIA, May 28-29 — Damian Warner might have started Day 2 of the annual Hypo-Meet decathlon at Götzis in 2nd behind Switzerland’s Simon Ehammer by 2 points, but nothing could stop the Olympic champion from powering to his record sixth straight win (and seventh overall) in the prestigious event. The Canadian’s winning 8797 put him 350 points ahead of Grenada’s Lindon Victor.
On Day 1, though Warner came within 0.02 of his 100 best at 10.14 and long-jumped a solid 26-¼ (7.93), Ehammer jumped out to a big lead early with his Deca WR 27-8¾ (8.45), a yearly world outdoor leader aided by just a 0.2 breeze. The previous record, 27-2¾ (8.30), was set by Ehammer at Ratingen in May.
For the 32-year-old Warner, marks of 48-11½ (14.92), 6-8 (2.03) and 47.92 over the course of the day brought him steadily closer to the lead, and he closed out the day at 4634.
The next day, the favorite surged to the front with his 13.48 in the hurdles, reached 158-3 (48.24) in the discus, vaulted 16-¾ (4.90), hit 192-4 (58.62) in the javelin, before wrapping it up with a 4:38.56 in the 1500. Behind him, Victor scored 8447, with Ehammer setting a PR 8377 in 3rd ahead of Niklas Kaul (8303) and Kai Kazmirek (8272).
As impressive a score as 8797 is, it is nearly 200 points shy of Warner’s then-PR 8995 set in winning the event last year. “Another year, another incredible experience,” he posted on Instagram.
Anouk Vetter, the Olympic silver medalist, put together a Dutch Record 6693 to capture the win in the heptathlon. It was 4 points more than she scored in Tokyo, helped along by a PR 196-2 (59.81) in the javelin. That was more than enough to stay clear of runner-up Adrianna Sułek of Poland (6429 PR) and Vanessa Grim of Germany (6323 PR).
