NCAA Women’s Triple Jump — Moore Unbeatable

Jasmine Moore ran her yearly TJ record to 7-for-7, including 2 Nationals. (MIKE SCOTT)

AFTER WINNING BOTH horizontals indoors and going undefeated in the triple all year, Jasmine Moore had plenty of call for confidence in her Saturday TJ, even after fouling her first attempt.

The Florida soph, after watching Texas Tech’s Rūta Lasmane take the lead with her first-round 44-1¾ (13.44) and then extend that with her next effort of 45-½ (13.73), remained calm on the runway for No. 2 before launching herself into a hop-step-jump that would extend to 46-½ (14.03) for the lead. It would be a mark that no one else could reach.

Following Moore in the order was Texas frosh Ackelia Smith, who produced a 44-8 (13.61) to move into 3rd. In round 3, Lasmane improved again, now to 45-7 (13.89). Feeling the pressure, Moore responded with a powerful 46-11¾ (14.32), a leap farther than anyone else in the field had ever gone. Smith followed up with a 45-3 (13.79) to tighten her hold on 3rd.

The jumping order shuffled in the last three rounds, no one improved in the fourth stanza, though Moore bounced a solid 45-5¼ (13.85). In round 5, Texas Tech’s Ruth Usoro leaped all the way from 4th to 2nd with her 45-9¼ (13.95). Moore fouled.

The competition ended with a whimper, with no one improving in round 6. Moore, plenty satisfied with winning the LJ/TJ double as she had indoors, finished the day with a perfunctory 44-1¼ (13.44). Teammate Natricia Hooper, the Indoor runner-up, struggled early before hitting a round 5 leap of 44-1¼ (13.44) for 6th.

“It was really exciting,” Moore said. “It is something that has been a goal of mine all year. Just actually being able to execute it and finish it off is just really rewarding, and I am just so thankful.”

Moore became the first since Cal’s Sheila Hudson in ’90 to capture both horizontals indoors and out in the same season. She did the same in the SEC, making her the first-ever for that particular 8-for-8 distinction.

“I was really happy to score the points for my team,” she said, “and I’m really thankful for coach Nik [Petersen] giving me the confidence to do it.”
