Nike Nationals Girls — Hedengren 3K Record In Prep Swan Song

No stranger to leading solo, Jane Hedengren said she knew her last prep race would be “a real grind.” Fast too. (VICTOR SAILER/PHOTO RUN)

EUGENE, OREGON, June 19–22 — Four hours after Cooper Lutkenhaus’s 2-lap heroics on the boys side of the Nike High School Nationals, in better but still rainy conditions, Jane Hedengren (Timpview, Provo, Utah) embarked on another of her reality-altering solo efforts, this time at 3000m. “I try to come in to a race not over-analyzing it, but I knew today was going to be a real grind,” she said.

Leading from the gun, Hedengren had company for the first 600 in soph Blair Bartlett (Lawrenceville, New Jersey), but from then on, each was running her own race.

Just behind the wavelights, which were set to 8:41, Hedengren metronomically produced laps of 70.31, 69.43, 69.73, 69.46, 69.96, and 69.11, before catching and passing the lead light with a 67.46 last lap for a new 8:40.03 HSR. Bartlett finished 2nd, more than 40 seconds later.

In this, her final high school race, Hedengren achieved her tenth (at least) record in ’25. No other prep girl has yet broken 9:00, although in ’14 Mary Cain, a high school senior by then competing as a Nike pro, was timed in 8:58.48 as she won that year’s World Junior (U20) title.

En route to her record-crunching 2M finish (9:17.75) two weeks earlier at the Brooks PR meet, Hedengren had lowered the 3K mark to 8:40.99. Her first foray under 9:00 had come two months before that at the Arcadia Invitational. No official time was taken at 3000 in that race although hand splits and video analysis made clear she had passed the marker in no slower than 8:54.6.

Here Hedengren was determined to close out her prep career on a high note. “Depending on how I was feeling, I wanted to close it out strong and get those lights at the end,” said the BYU-bound senior. “It was much more of a battle than I anticipated; the last two laps, I just really tried to dig for it. I wanted to maximize my effort today, and wherever that put me, I would have been pretty content. It did feel like a victory lap, especially with a lot of uncertainties coming in. I just wanted to be bold out there and run as strong as I could.”

Junior Jasmine Robinson (Kennesaw, Georgia) put up a fine 13.30/57.63 hurdles double in spite of the sub-optimal weather.
