THERE APPEARS TO BE a healthy and interesting rivalry developing between Texas A&M’s Winny Bii and Oklahoma’s Agur Dwol in the triple jump. Coming into Eugene, the two juniors had met three times in championship meets this year and Dwol had a 2–1 edge.
They were assigned to the same flight, and Dwol opened at 45-2¼ (13.77), jumping in the fourth slot. Two jumpers later, Bii was prepared and she responded with 45-9¾ (13.96). She was in the lead, but couldn’t relax.
After all, Dwol had edged her by a centimeter at the SEC, 46-0 (14.02)–45-11¾ (14.01). And lurking over in the other flight was Sweden’s Emilia Sjöstrand, a 4-time All-American for San José State who has an indoor PR of 46-2¾ (14.09).
The Swede opened at 45-6¼ (13.87), a season-best mark and she skipped past Dwol by 4 inches into 2nd. Although Sjöstrand improved by a centimeter on her final attempt, that was it.
Every jumper in the eventual top 8 secured her place in the first two rounds.
Bii transferred this year to A&M from Oklahoma State, where she had a ’24 best of 45-¼ (13.73).
“The coaches at A&M helped my technique by getting me on a bicycle a lot,” Bii said, “That helped my first phase. So my first two phases were good today. But No. 3 wasn’t as good as normal because my back was hurting.”
The only other 14-meter jumper in the field was Clemson senior Shantae Foreman, also with a 45-11¼ (14.01) PR. She opened at 45-¼ (13.72) and tailed off from there but held onto 4th.
