NCAA Regionals — Another CR For Camryn Rogers

BLOOMINGTON, INDIANA & FAYETTEVILLE, ARKANSAS, May 25-28—The NCAA Regionals is a meet focused on generating a list of qualifiers for the Finals in Eugene two weeks later, rather than creating great head-to-head matchups and scintillating performances.

Yet fans had plenty to rave about this year, as a number of athletes produced superlative efforts, perhaps none more so than Cal’s Camryn Rogers, who produced the longest hammer throw in collegiate history. The big one, another Canadian Record, came on her initial toss at the West regional, a 250-10 (76.46) that added more than 2-feet to her best. Said Rogers, “We had a mission going in to get the job done and do it on the first throw — to be able to execute our plan exactly as we set it out to be was really awesome.”

The highlight in the East belonged to Florida State hurdler Trey Cunningham, whose 13.07 into a 1.5 headwind put him at No. 4 on the all-time collegiate list. It also marked the fastest anyone has ever hurdled with more than a 0.2 in their face.

U.S. list leaders came from Micah Williams of Oregon, who blasted a legal 9.86 dash to become the No. 2 collegian ever, and Randolph Ross of North Carolina A&T with his 44.23 in the 400. Collegiate leaders went to Du Mapaya of Texas Tech, who tripled a 56-0 (17.07) and Ohio State’s Adelaide Aquilla at 62-7¾ (19.09) in the shot.

Some exceptional windy performances made a mark on the all-conditions all-time tabulation at 200: Florida’s Joseph Fahnbulleh, a 19.85 (4.4 wind) and Kentucky’s Abby Steiner with 22.01 (2.1). In the 100, Julien Alfred of Texas put herself on the a-c list with a 10.80 (2.2). In another quarterfinal, Rosemary Chukwuma of Texas Tech sprinted 10.82 (2.6) ahead of Oregon’s Kemba Nelson (10.85).
