Arcadia Boys — Powell’s Finishing Burst Takes 8-Lapper

For once an Arcadia 3200 went tactical and Owen Powell pounced over the last lap for the win. (KIRBY LEE/IMAGE OF SPORT)

ARCADIA, CALIFORNIA, April 11-12 — It would have been a surprise if the Arcadia 3200 were not the headline event. Ever since the legendary Hulst/Serna/Hunt duels of the ’70s, the Invitational has become the go-to in-season distance meeting place of the year. The ’25 lineup did not disappoint, as 5 sub-4 HS milers were hoping to add to the luster of Arcadia’s premier event.

Indoor mile recordholder Owen Powell (Mercer Island, Washington) would be joined by the Crater (Central Point, Oregon) duo of Josiah Tostenson and Tayvon Kitchen, Tommy Latham (Marist, Brookhaven, Georgia) and the newly crowned New Zealand 1500 champ, Sam Ruthe, who was ready to show his fellow schoolboys who could be king of the hill. Ruthe, racing on his 16th birthday here, owns a 3:58.35 PR.

After that buildup, who would have thought that the pace would be mediocre? The field of 37 passed 1600 in a respectable, but not astounding, 4:29 by Kenan Dagge (Desert Oasis, Nevada), closely followed by Powell, Ruthe, Tostenson, Kitchen and a bevy behind chomping at the bit to prevail with the fastest 4-lap finish.

After the steady diet of 68s, the pace increased to the 65s and with 2 laps to go it was Herriman junior Jackson Spencer just a whisper ahead of Kitchen, Ruthe, Powell, Tostenson, et al.

After a 62.5 it was Kitchen, Powell, Tostenson, Ruthe and Latham at the bell. Just before the backstretch, Powell turned on the jets and never looked back. He passed 3000 in 8:13 and would finish with one of the most comfortable 54-second last laps in memory to tally 8:39.86 (4:10 final 1600).

He was followed by Tostenson (8:40.95), Ruthe (8:43.57), Kitchen (8:43.94), Latham (8:45.57) and 24 others under 9:00.

Powell reflected on the quality of the participants, “I was really excited coming into today with all the talented people in the field. Five sub-4 guys in one race? I don’t know if there’s ever been a race like that. But honestly, it’s not how I thought this race would have played out. I was fully prepared, mentally prepared, to go out in 4:15 or faster.”

The most impressive field action occurred in the discus where Simon Rosselli (Mead, Spokane) topped off his series with a 218-7 penultimate-rounder (moving to No. 7 all-time). That easily outdistanced McKay Madsen’s best of 200-9.

Other action saw Mt. Miguel, California, junior Brandon Arrington capture a 100/200 double with his 10.32/20.35 (HSL) wins, the latter of which eclipsed Noah Lyles’ 20.48 meet record from ’16.

In the 400, Temecula Valley’s Jack Stadlman backed up his early-season 45.69 with a 45.92 victory over Long Beach Poly junior Noah Smith’s 46.56.

Joseph Socarras (Belen, Miami) broke Michael Granville’s 30-year-old 800 meet record, 1:47.96, with his 1:47.66. And the way he did it! With negative splits of 55.01/52.65.
